Uses for and Care of a Glass Terrarium

Here at H Potter, we offer a myriad of unique and functional decorations for your home and garden. In addition, many of them will add not only curb appeal and character to your home but will give you a creative outlet. With a  glass terrarium, for example, you can really take the reins in the design of your home.

It all starts with a little knowledge of how to set up your terrarium and what you will include as a part of its design. Many people use terrariums to cultivate green spaces inside of their homes, but others use them for the creative license they allow you.

You can fill a glass terrarium with little decorative trinkets to match a space inside your home, or will one with colorful river rocks to add an interesting terrestrial appeal. You can also fill one with other themed oddities to lend some color to a setting. Fill one with dry grass and an old bird’s nest and eggshells to provide an antiquated air. If you live by the sea, fill one with shells, sea glass, or other curios you picked up by the water.

These are some of the more interesting uses for a glass terrarium like one of those that you can find on our website, but probably the most prevalent and practical use of one is as an indoor planter.

Because of their unique design, terrariums are excellent for housing certain species of indoor plants. Every plant will have its own unique needs in sunlight, fertilizer, and water, but if you take your time to do your research, you’ll find that a terrarium presents you with a unique opportunity of a relatively low maintenance method for adding plants to your home.

If you pick up a glass terrarium from our website and decide to use it to grow plants inside of it here are some pointers to follow. At the bottom of your terrarium, you should add a layer of pea gravel or similarly sized stones. This will help to moderate the drainage of the system and will allow what you add above it to absorb moisture and drain as needed. One note to mention is that the gravel should not be too fine or it will not allow the soil above it to drain properly and if it is always wet it can allow mold to grow. After you add in the gravel, throw a little bit of activated charcoal above it. Spread the mix evenly over the bottom of the terrarium.

Next, it’s time for you to add some soil to your terrarium, filling almost, but not all the way, to the top of the tray. If you will be growing moisture-loving plants, you can add a little bit of moss into the soil and mix it thoroughly before adding it. The moss can help to regulate the rate at which the soil drains. Then, make depressions in the soil where you want to plant your plants; do not overcrowd the terrarium, and remember that your plants will get larger over time.

Plant your plants and water your terrarium lightly, keeping in mind the unique needs of your plants; plants like cacti will need less water, for example, and some plants are susceptible to root rot. When you place the glass over the top over your terrarium, as the plant drinks and breathes, the terrarium will recycle its own water.

Place your terrarium in a place that gets natural light, and be sure to rotate every few days or weeks, as your plants will grow toward the sun. Without rotating your terrarium, your plants may begin to grow lopsided. Every so often, trim any dead growth off of your plants and check the soil for signs of mold growth. If there is any, air out the terrarium and remove any visible growth.
